Mexico is calling and if you haven’t answered yet – what’s the hold up?
Mexico is well known as a popular resort destination in Latin America, but this beautiful country has much more to offer than just white sand beaches and Bellini margaritas. From some of the most delicious food (both street food and five start dining) to its ancient ruins and fascinating history, these are our top 5 must-visit destinations for your next trip to sunny Mexico!
Puerto Vallarta
The beautiful resort town of Puerto Vallarta is located on Mexico's Pacific coast in the state of Jalisco. Despite being one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, Puerto Vallarta (specifically the region around Old Vallarta) is still a favorite of ours for a slower paced beach getaway in Mexico.
While all of the classic resort activities can still be enjoyed here (think snorkeling trips, yacht trips, horseback riding etc.), you can also have an equally enjoyable week away simply strolling the streets of Old Town, laying out on the beach or perusing the local goods in the many shops & markets.
Riviera Maya
Located along a stunning stretch of coastline in the Gulf of Mexico you will find the Riviera Maya.
This area of beautiful beaches is located South of the city of Cancun and includes popular resort destinations like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Puerto Morelos.
This region of Mexico boasts a wide variety of things to do including snorkeling with stingrays and scuba diving in one of the world’s largest underwater museums. It is also known for its access beautiful cenotes and some amazing archaeological sites, so be sure to allow yourself plenty of off-resort time to explore all that the Riviera Maya has to offer the adventure traveler in you!
Cozumel
Speaking of Riviera Maya, the laid-back island of Cozumel is located just off of the coast of the Riviera Maya and is largely underdeveloped compared to the mainland. If you are truly looking to unplug, unwind and enjoy the sunshine of the South, then Cozumel is a beautiful choice.
Just off of Cozumel’s southwestern coast you will find the world’s second-longest coral reef system (second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef) and some absolutely beautiful conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling. Not interested in diving? No problem - the views from the beaches are picture perfect as well.
Riviera Nayarit
If you like the sounds of those laid-back vibes, then Riviera Nayarit is also worth your consideration.
Located North of Puerto Vallarta you will find the surf haven of Riviera Nayarit and its up-and-coming fishing villages turned luxury boutique hotel towns.
Indulge at a yoga retreat or surf villa in Sayulita or Punta Mita, or head further North up the coast to get back to the roots of laid-back, chilled out Riviera Nayarit.
Mexico City
If you thought that I was going to get through this post without mentioning my absolute favorite city in the world, then you were sorely mistaken.
Mexico City is not only the capital of Mexico, but one of the country’s most popular destinations thanks to its world famous foodie scene and extravagant museums & art galleries. Spend a few days in this city full of life and culture and you will never want to leave.
Visit Plaza de la Constitution to check out the Metropolitan Cathedral and National Palace, or spend a day outside the city exploring the ruins of Teotihuacán.
